MALA Holiday Party and Meeting

Friday, December 9, 2011 6-9 pm

The annual MALA holiday party was held at the home of Gardner and Irene Neely on Friday, December 9. Besides nearly all of the 2011 Board, some new as well as longtime friends and members were in attendance including Kay Pinckney, Tim Wojcik, Louise White and her husband Lucio, and others.

After socializing and delicious food, the group gathered to elect officers and discuss possibilities for programs for 2011. First we looked back at our year of activities which began with a continuing education program that was jointly supported with two other local library organizations. That meeting was later followed by tours of two libraries, Carter and CNN. Yulia summarized these programs for the group.

After discussion of officer positions and voting, there were no changes in the slate of officers for 2012. Next year's officers are as follows:

President - Yulia Hadzhieva
Vice-President Programs - Florence Tang
Membership Chair - Steven Vincent
Membership Committee - Will Smith
Treasurer - Irene McMorland
Secretary - Thom Shelton
Historian - Louise White
Webmaster - Nancy Bryant

We discussed several program possibilities for 2012 including a tour of the Atlanta Metro Library for Accessible Services (AMLAS). We also discussed two ideas for workshops, including one on e-readers, ipods, and phone apps and another on the use of technology in schools. Yulia suggested that we buy an e-reader and give it as a trivia prize during one of the workshops we planned to sponsor.

We learned from Yulia of a request from SLA Georgia Chapter for our  support for another event in January 2012. It was decided that currently MALA will not be able to contribute $300 toward a joint program.

We thank Gardner and Irene for hosting the party and Thom Shelton for the meeting summary.

We wish all of you a wonderful New Year and hope to see you in 2012.
