MALA Holiday Party and Meeting

The MALA holiday party 2007 was held at the home of  Louise White and Lucio Chiaraviglio. Louise and Lucio greeted us with a gracious spread of refreshments that appetizers, dips, sweets, and a steaming pot of delicious chili. We shared holiday cheer, caught up with friends, and talked with  new members, before we settled down to our annual business meeting.

The first order of business was to elect the slate of officers nominated for 2008. Congratulations to the following MALA Officers for 2008:

Steven Vincent -  President
Gardner Neely - Vice President -- Programming
Florence Tang - Vice President -- Membership
Irene McMorland - Treasurer
Kay Pinckney - Secretary
Louise White - Historian
Nancy Bryant - Webmaster

The Historian and Webmaster, Louise White and Nancy Bryant, are non-elected positions.

We heard from Tim Wojcik about a proposed GLA-GLMA Joint Committee on Information Literacy. This is a K-16 (kindergarten through college) effort, spearheaded by Nadine Cohen at the University of Georgia, to involve librarians and media specialists in statewide information literacy initiatives. We heard about the MALA Professional Development Grant, which provides an opportunity for MALA members to be reimbursed up to $250 toward attendance at a professional meeting or conference. So far we have received no applications for the award. We talked about ways to better market the award to students in library programs at GSU, Valdosta State, and GA. Perimeter College.

We discussed program ideas for 2008. Some suggestions included a program on educational opportunities in librarianship in Georgia, and a visit to a nature center in the Atlanta area.
