MALA - The Metro-Atlanta Library Association |
Spring Meeting - 2005
MALA met on the evening of April 14th at the Decatur campus of Devry University. Members began arriving at about 6:30, and we had a good 30 minutes of introductions, conversation, and refreshments. The program, led by Dr. Green, began at about 7pm.
Dr. Ravonne Green described distance learning in the context of her instruction and school. She is Assistant Professor in the MLIS program at Valdosta State University (VSU). Methods of instruction and interaction methods between the instructors, the students, and each other were discussed. Several current and former MLS students brought their experiences to the discussion. The VSU MLIS website is http://books.valdosta.edu/mlis/index.html .
The conversation also touched on some of the specifics of the Valdosta State University MLS program. Tuition, accreditation, enrollments and course offerings were described by Dr. Green and current Valdosta MLS students in attendance at the meeting. Materials from VSU and other schools with MLS programs were available for distribution.
Yolanda Stewart, an MLS student at Clark Atlanta University, was recognized for her winning entry in the Scholarship Essay Contest. Ms. Stewart gave an update on the last semester of the Library School at Clark. She noted that a celebration for the Library School will take place at 5pm on Graduation Day, Monday May 16th.
Also noted was the status of the other new Georgia library instruction program, the LIST program being developed by the Georgia Perimeter College Dunwoody Campus. The status remains: pending Board of Regents approval. The LIST webpage is http://www.gpc.edu/~dunlib/LIST/ .
Special thanks to Kate Stirk, MALA Vice President for Programming, and Mary Antoine, Reference Librarian at DeVry University, for planning and coordinating this meeting.
